"I would not go so far as to say that half the appeal of a fantasy book lies in the maps. But I certainly know readers of fantasy who linger over the geography and the layout of the imaginary world into which they are being invited.
In the case of great fantasy epics - the greatest being the progenitor of them all, "The Lord of the Rings" - whole volumes have been dedicated to mapping the adventure, as in "The Journeys of Frodo."
As a child I loved maps and I am sure it was in part this that drew me into a love of imaginary worlds where the lie of the land could be as I wished it to be.
I therefore offer you two maps that will hopefully guide you in your visits to the world of Erderelm. The first shows that part of the Western Continent in which the action of "The King Sword" takes place and the second shows in more detail the layout of the rural enclave known as The Freelands.
I hope you enjoy your visit to this world and that the maps may help to guide your steps on its roads, both straight and winding."
